$2.15 million wrongful death settlement for the death of Irma Dela Torre, who was shot in the back by Salinas police. From this settlement, $1.6 million went to Irma’s 79-year-old mother in Mexico, represented by Haddad & Sherwin; her recent husband was represented by other counsel. Irma’s sister had called for an ambulance when Irma became disoriented from having a seizure. Police ignored their training for handling disoriented people, and one officer shot her in the back, later claiming he thought she had a knife. Only a harmless five inch crochet hook was found at the scene.
